Philosophical Foundations of Chinese Medicine

Chinese Medicine foundations are rooted in Taoist philosophy. Taoism teaches “the way of nature” and observes the patterns that nature reveals for the harmony of growth. Being a witness of the earth and all its’ potency means honoring that the answers we seek in order to thrive are revealed through our willingness to see how climate, the elements of life, and the relationships of these components effect the livelihoods of all species in the plant and animal kingdoms for better or worse. Understanding how to build relationships with these essential factors of experience that bring health and fulfillment enables a medicinal approach that restores balance, endurance, and integration for improved quality of life.

Medicine that originates in our relationship as a human on the earth, nourishes the body, heart, mind, and spirit as one. It seeks to treat the being as a whole and not troubleshoot  it like a machine one can replace with spare parts and pump synthetic chemicals into in order to rectify the first signs of an imbalance that may lead to worsening conditions that would require some level of artificial intervention. Learning the wisdom of plants and harnessing the bodies’ innate capacity to heal itself, through the stimulation or subduing of energy, blood, lymph, and vital nutrient particles, forms the basis of Chinese Medicine modalities and their effects. Acupuncture, Cupping, muscle and joint manipulation, Qi Gong, physical exercises and meditations, dietary re-alignments, and herbal medicine are all applied after discerning the nature of the imbalance in one’s being.

Some forms of dis-ease or imbalance are simple, such as “excess Heat or Yang and Damp-Cold invading the body (Po) or mind (Shen). Some are more complex, such as Damp-heat in the Large Intestine with Deficiency Cold in the “lower jiao” (abdominopelvic region).  Chinese Medicine includes acute and chronic conditions in the understanding of an imbalance as well and will formulate treatment based on what is perceived as the root cause, while also managing the branchwork of symptoms that develop from that root. There are many schools of thought that developed historically over time around primary root causes of imbalance which mirror modern medicine specializations and delegations of symptomatic concerns to one body system. Yet, the roots of Taoism remind all forms of thought in the Chinese medical field that we are products of the environment outside us as well as within. Any change in one or the other creates a challenge or opportunity for imbalance and loss of ease when we have not re-aligned the energy and function of the inner and outer.  The force of change in Taoist philosophy is Wind. It opens and closes the pores of our protective flesh, allowing the outer elements and climatic factors into the body. When conjured within it is the force that breaks down our filters and consistency, allowing for dramatic changes in awareness and behaviors.

It is the nature of relationship to honor the dance of change, reciprocity, integration, resistance, and re-alignment again and again. Every relationship faces new opportunities to learn and evolve functionality for the purposes of harmony and fulfillment. Applying what is learned when similar patterns arise shows an individual’s capacity to harness one’s inner power of creativity in a sustainable way.  Chinese Medicine reminds us that we are rooted in the Tao of existence on this earth and must find our way by acknowledging where we already are and what our relationship is to that state. The inner and outer are not separate. This wisdom marks the focus of intent for the journey ever unfolding. It highlights and invigorates a call for balance to overcome pernicious factors that influence one’s body and mind by learning to embody inspired movement (Ying) with fortified containment (Wei).

Spring is the time of Wood, a season of growth when the blood cleanses out the decay of winter and activates a new sense of vitality. Summer is the time of Fire, a season of ripening to full radiance and creative alchemy, only witnessed in the fruit of our intentional focus as we look ahead to harvest season. Both invite us to find a stillness within the motivations for activity that regenerates, extends, and contains our anticipation for the inspiration to dance and play in the liberating beauty of our existence and the endurance required to manifest fulfillment. Let yourself explore the way wood and fire move within you and around you as you embark on this next cycle of earthly enthrallment!

Healing Mantra for Acknowledgment of Self-Authority

“I seek the will of sovereignty and cultivate trust with my inner authority.

I release the perception that anyone else has power over me.

I have the power to dream in my own authority.

No matter what I have been told or not told,

what has been forced upon me or what has never been given.

When I activate my own authority,

the power to manifest my true nature is confirmed to me.

I maintain openness and adaptability

to co-creating with the authority of others.”
