Herbal Medicine

Herbal medicine is a profound and key attribute of many treatment plans, due to its complimentary and enduring supportive function during the restoration process.

Food is medicine and plants are food. We must not only consider healing ourselves from the outside in, but from the inside out.

Chinese Herbal Therapy has been an essential form of treatment in combination with Acupuncture for over 2000 years. Herbs can prove to be a powerful addition to other forms of treatment because of their nutritive, regulating, and activating qualities. The difference between herbs and synthetic based medicines is that herbs, most often, have less or no adverse effects. This is due to their innate balance of natural bio-chemicals. These bio-chemicals are produced in different parts of the plant and at different stages of growth in a plants’ life cycle.

By using “whole plant” medicine, balance and regulation of body functions may be achieved with the synergy of these naturally occurring constituents.

Herbal formulas offer the benefit of customization over generality, when treating individuals with similar disease processes, yet differing symptoms, in order to promote restoration and increase functionality for short term or long term needs. Electro-Acupuncture Therapy

Many studies are currently under way to understand the efficacy and parameters of Chinese Medicine in the treatment of Stroke and other neurological disorders. The image below shows profound results for a series of Electro-Acupuncture treatments of facial paralysis. Electro-Acupuncture is an effective technique that helps restore proper nerve conduction to areas lacking sensory or motor activity, as well as, reduce pain signals traveling to and from the brain in areas of chronic pain. Electro-Acupuncture may also be used for acute injuries such as ankle sprain, frozen shoulder syndrome, and hairline fractures of the hand and foot.

Therapeutic Cupping

Therapeutic Cupping is an ancient Eastern technique that uses suction of glass cups over broad regions on the body to reduce tension and draw fluid out of the area by increasing lymphatic flow and circulation of blood to the target tissue. This application helps purge toxins from the body as a whole and may also be key for pain relief from prolonged muscle tension.

There are 3 methods used when cupping. Stationary Cupping is essential to relieve upper respiratory tract inflammation and chest congestion at the onset or for prolonged colds and allergies. Flash Cupping may be used for reducing skin inflammation from chronic eczema or psoriasis and draining toxins out from the bodies’ reactive tissues. Sliding Cup is a luxurious experience, in place of a hands on massage, used to relax and lengthen deep layers of muscle. This draws out any stagnation of lymph fluid resulting in a prolonged sense of balance and relief in the Musculoskeletal system.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is most commonly used for tonification of acupuncture points, reducing pain and swelling, or dispersing and drying rashes. This ancient technique uses a burning herbal stick, ball, or wedge and is most commonly the herb Artemesia spp. Application may be indirect above regions of the body or directly on skin prepared with protective burn cream. Moxibustion is also a great take home tool for continuing self care for some maladies during the interim between treatments to expedite healing times and engage self care. The Artemisia spp. plant offers a delightful calming effect to the senses for those who do not mind its aromatic odor. Please Note: Due to our current location we are unable to provide this service in the office but still teach how to treat oneself this way at home if this technique is recommended.

Lifestyle Attunement

is the most important component of any treatment plan. How we live our day to day holds the greatest set of factors for restoring and maintaining health. Assessing and attuning one’s designation of time for daily activities such as, diet, exercise, and self care, beyond other demands is essential for improving health and happiness.

Take Home Exercises

Qi Gong, meridian stretches, meditation, and mind-body awareness are all tools and offerings we can give ourselves, in order to shift our perceptions around ailments or concerns and re-attain harmony. Such techniques are considered for every patient during the course of a treatment plan. These exercises can be paramount in shifting one’s body out of compensation patterns and into strengthening form and balance to procure long term pain relief and restoration of body function. At home exercises support patients in their focus for self care and provide an opportunity to cultivate a practice for daily use, in order to sustain treatment results and autonomy of body, heart, and mind.

~An Offering~

When in doubt or overwhelm the primary key to remember is “Just Breathe.” Breathing is the solid foundation to every body system and the peace of heart and mind. So, take a moment and consider how deep you are breathing. Attempt to take a full inhale for 7 counts and a full exhale for 10 counts. Repeat 5 times gradually, smoothly, not forcefully. Assess how you feel.
Proper breathing mechanics are used in every exercise routine, meditation, and during times of expected pain (ie. Labor pains or historically in minor surgery). The power of the breath is the power to give your body nourishment even when you feel without. Try this breathing exercise once every hour you are awake or set aside time for a longer cycling of breaths (13-21) 1-2 times a day and notice after 1 week how you feel.

Testimonial:

"Let me just start by saying that Jewls is amazing. My primary physician suggested acupuncture for a chronic shoulder issue I was having. That made good sense to me. I had been to acupuncture before. I looked for someone in the Sandy area and found Jewls. I am incredibly impressed with her approach, which extends beyond acupuncture into other treatments and holistic recommendations. Jewls connects with her patients with genuine interest and concern. She treats the whole person. After only a few sessions we almost have this issue resolved. I highly recommend Jewls and Faiz Healing for holistic, inspired and thorough care."      -Marie K
