Advocating For Your Health
Considering your health for quality of life and receiving the care that benefits you is an essential part of advocating for your health. To advocate for yourself means finding ways to communicate what is happening to your physical, mental, and emotional body. This includes asking questions that support a deeper understanding of your body and perceived concerns for your health. Advocacy can be one of the largest hurdles to getting your needs met in everyday life and especially in the healthcare setting. So many aspects of diagnosis for proper treatment rely on the information available to the practitioner assessing your concerns to provide adequate care. This is why body awareness is an essential tool when discerning health and the effectiveness of treatment.
Questionnaires in the healthcare field vary in their simplicity and complexity when gathering details about body functions. One’s ability to expound on their noticed symptoms or functional challenges is even more important than just answering a questionnaire or checking boxes related to body systems. This is because a human is more than an algorithm on paper. There is a subjective process that tends to reveal more layers of your experience. Things that were not recalled initially or qualitative reviews of frequency and associated activities may be big pieces of the puzzle that shift the care and treatment one receives.
Understanding one’s body and health can feel overwhelming or produce coping mechanisms of avoidance and disregard. Seeing a healthcare professional can feel intimidating or dissatisfying. Learning how to advocate for one’s health is a journey that invites an individual to expand their knowledge about how the body functions at optimal capacity and what it looks and feels like in over drive or with decreased output. This includes what it means to be healthy vs. what it means to have quality of life in the context of longterm illness or injury and what treatments may be available for curative or management outcomes. When an individual pursues this knowledge in the context of body awareness they empower their ability to get their needs met and ask the best questions of the healthcare practitioners they are working with.
This enables better communication so a patient feels seen and heard as a living being, more than just a concept or number, when it comes to diagnosis and treatment.
Patients should feel empowered to speak up when something feels missed, not quite right, or disregarded and practitioners should feel obliged to explain, re-examine, or clarify to honor the patient’s interest in advocating for their health. Regardless of expertise or specialization, healthcare professionals are fallible and sometimes short-sighted in their assessments. When in doubt, get a second or third opinion. However, the frequency of fallibility and short-sightedness is increased by lack of adequate information and reporting from a patient about their bodily experience. This is why it is essential as a practitioner to help patients expand body awareness of sensation and function as well as language to communicate that experience to self and others. Advocating for one’s health is a joint relationship between patient and practitioner to ensure proper assessment and treatment.
How do you feel about your health and capacity to advocate for yourself to get your needs met? How in tune are you with your physical, mental, and emotional body? Are there areas speaking loudly to you for care or aspects you have been avoiding or disregarding?
Consider 3 steps you can take to advocate for your health and quality of life this month and put them into action!
Mantra for Liberation & Harmony
"I embrace the symphony of my soul
and reflect in the resonance beneath
my thoughts and emotions.
I align with my highest sense of self
and seek harmony in all my endeavors,
relationships, and interactions with the world.
I trust in my own power to make choices
that tend to the healing of wounds I carry
and bring synchrony to any discord that arises
in the soundtrack I am creating for my life."

Family Constellation Group Healing
A 2-3 hour experience focused on healing patterns of conflict and trauma affecting one’s current life story. In this group facilitation attendees will represent concepts or roles in one’s experience and/or family system to reveal visual and somatic relationship dynamics that have imprinted one’ s perceptions of self and how they operate in life as supportive or detrimental factors to the endeavor for holistic fulfillment. This is a very powerful group experience that resonates in the emotional and spiritual body and ripples out into the lives of those who attend even if they do not have their own issue/conflict directly represented. The experience of group healing is profound in its ability to remind us all of the connection we share as humankind. Note: If you would like to come and be a witness or do not want to represent for another you are still welcome in the circle.
