What is PsychoNeuroImmunology?
Over the last 20 years, medical science has focused on a more holistic understanding of how the body, mind, and emotional state affect one another. Prolonged stress and imbalances with poor lifestyle choices have been consistently revealed as major factors in immune function. The study of what is now called “PsychoNeuroImmunology” creates an opportunity for more physicians and medical personnel to specialize in the discipline of a more holistic approach to health, instead of a reductionistic one. This means diagnoses and medical advice can be understood through a broader lens of factors affecting improvement in symptom cascades, as well as, direct patients to more nourishing practices that support the body, mind, and heart as allies in protecting and expanding quality of life.
PsychoNeuroImmunology reveals a complex relationship between our immune pathways, biochemical messengers and receptors, and the autonomic nervous system output. Over 150 studies have shown how we feel emotionally and what we think affect our physical health because of how these feelings and thoughts stimulate the release of different body chemicals. The more intense or stagnant one feels about their life, health, or an experience, the greater the compensations in the nervous system’s dual response to initiate fight or flight or engage processing and relaxation. While it is also true that our body pain and immune health can affect mood and thoughts with chronic inflammation, it is important to recognize the feedback system the body pathways operate within.
Holistic practices for self-care such as, healthy foods, enjoyable exercise, meditation for decompression and focus, and cultivating self-development skills to improve relationship dynamics with those we share life with, are essential. Learning how to incorporate them into life routines or asserting the need for them at times that the body, mind, and heart are calling for attention, enables a more fulfilling experience of self and life. If we don’t take care of ourselves, the ripple effect in bodily health, life endeavors, and relationships becomes apparent. We each are responsible for tending to the self in order to restore and rejuvenate from the demands of the life we are living.
So, next time you are sad or stressed to the point of no appetite or compelled to eat excessively, try something nourishing instead like your favorite fruit, a spoonful of raw honey, or a fresh smoothie with vanilla or chocolate. If that’s not satisfying, find a journal and write down your feelings and thoughts or choose a repetitive craft or hobbie to keep you tasking in a relaxing way. If you are angry or anxious, try going for a run or doing repetitive whole body exercise, while engaging your breath to move the excess energy coming through. If that is not enough, try a hot Epsom salt bath with sedating aromatherapy oils or meditate to calming music with a weighted blanket or pillows around you. If your mind is fixated and cycling around concerns for a chronic condition within you or your environment, sit down and write out a plan of options for how to tend or resolve the concerns. Weigh the trade-offs in each and feel into your instincts for which steps or plan attributes feel most important. Then, set dates and times you want to implement this plan and make the commitment to honor it by following through. If you are still discouraged or caught up, find another task that distracts the mind and that feel enjoyable and supportive until you are ready to revisit your concerns from a fresh perspective.
Herbal medicine, Bodywork, Acupuncture, Energy Healing, and group or individual counseling are all additional options that act as external allies for self-care. All of these practices discussed are profound in their effects on the body, mind, and heart. When we choose to learn to listen to these parts of self, they teach us how to tend to them in supportive ways for a higher quality of beingness.

Family Constellation Group Healing
A 2-3 hour experience focused on healing patterns of conflict and trauma affecting one’s current life story. In this group facilitation attendees will represent concepts or roles in one’s experience and/or family system to reveal visual and somatic relationship dynamics that have imprinted one’ s perceptions of self and how they operate in life as supportive or detrimental factors to the endeavor for holistic fulfillment. This is a very powerful group experience that resonates in the emotional and spiritual body and ripples out into the lives of those who attend even if they do not have their own issue/conflict directly represented. The experience of group healing is profound in its ability to remind us all of the connection we share as humankind. Note: If you would like to come and be a witness or do not want to represent for another you are still welcome in the circle.
$40-$60 Donation is recommended. Time: 2pm-5pm
